Vietnam 02
Since 1993, a dense network of collaborators from Ho Chi Min City has been following families and orphans from various parts of Vietnam, offering support for feeding, education, and health care. In 1998, thanks to some young university students, the Pho Cap school for the poor of the Binh Thanh district was founded and in 2001, in this context, the AFN long-distance support programme was launched.
With the reopening of international adoptions in the country, starting in 2004 activities were launched to improve the living conditions of minors in institutions and in 2010 a family home was inaugurated in Binh Duong. In recent years, the structure has been converted into a social centre to offer a greater number of children and adolescents a path of human and integral promotion.
DEFINITION OF THE ECONOMIC AND SOCIAL CONTEXT
After the bitter war that ended in 1975, Vietnam is experiencing a period of economic and social growth, but despite this, the situation of the majority of the population is still very precarious, with almost 9 million people living in extreme poverty. 8.3% of the Vietnamese population is concentrated in Ho Chi Minh City, which, as a result, is the city with the highest population density in the country. There are over one and a half million children in the 0-16 age group, 30% of them live in precarious situations, come from poor or migrant families.
