DR of the Congo “Petite Flamme”
The Long-Distance Sponsorship Project (SAD) in the Democratic Republic of the Congo began in May 1995 thanks to the support of the emerging local community of the Focolare Movement. “Petite Flamme” (Piccola Fiamma di speranza) aims to promote the well-being of children and their families.
DEFINITION OF THE ECONOMIC AND SOCIAL CONTEXT
The Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), located in the Great Lakes region, is the third largest country in the African continent. It has more than 86 million inhabitants, divided into more than 200 ethnic groups. It is a country of immense natural resources, its equatorial forest is the second largest reserve in the world after the Amazon in Brazil, Lake Tanganyika is the second in the world for depth and quantity of fish. The Congolese subsoil is rich in cobalt (60% of the world’s reserves), copper, uranium, zinc, and manganese in the south; to the east of gold, coltan, oil and diamonds. Congo’s riches are sources of enrichment for multinationals at the expense of the local population who live in poverty. The country ranks near the bottom of the Human Development Index (175th out of 189).
